Ughhhhhhh this fucking SUCKS, and responding with rage & a sale & a plan all shot through with a thread of furious humor is extremely you. (And effective, at least for this sale-lover.) Looking forward to tomorrow’s announcement & I hope you do sweet fuck-all at least one day this week! Unlikely, but I’m putting it into the world nonetheless!
Just subscribed. Ambition Monster meant so much to me, personally and professionally. I love your voice and I cherish your candor on all the things. Hang in there.
I don't like affixing a heart to this. This is just a huge bummer and I'm sorry to hear it. I'm a big fan -- really loved Ambition Monster -- and happy to be a paid subscriber here. (I'll double-check to make sure that's true, I'm a big old slut when it comes to newsletters and lose track of what I'm paying for sometimes.)
This sucks. You have been served a shit sandwich and I’m sorry for the life stress. And it really fucks with us because we were raised to think “being good at my job” was protection against “losing my job.” You did everything right and you still got this outcome, and then you’re mourning a loss of a sense of order on top of the other losses.
(The last time I was laid off, it was via video 30 minutes before my husband was checking in for surgery. So I just…stress-cried in the waiting room while trying to grab any and all info I needed from my laptop while I still had access. It was a very “marriage as an action” kind of day.)
Toxic positivity isn’t my jam, so I won’t say any of that bullshit. The only real silver lining at a moment like this is the sudden gift of unstructured time that you rarely get as an adult. I do hope you’ll find value in that aspect of recent unemployment (and only that aspect, because it’s all such bullshit you know?)
No no no. As an avid listener to your podcast, I have a sense that you saw this coming and share your rage. Happy to be a subscriber and have been mulling joining the Patreon writing group. You are SO talented and have so much to share (much more than corporate america deserves). I can't even imagine what you will now do with this time and energy - I know it will be great, but for now I will curse the overlords that made this decision.
God DAMN. You have such a fucking good attitude. Or, at least you're FAKING a good attitude. Honestly, I don't recognize the world about me at this point. I really don't. I'm watching my daughter, summa cum laude college graduate, looking for a fucking job FOR OVER A YEAR. What kind of fucking alternative universe are we living in? I'm mad about this for you. I really god damn am. I KNOW, I KNOW....that does no good. But too many INCREDIBLY excellent, highly experienced people are losing their jobs. I always fantasize about getting right in their fucking faces to ask: and what are YOU getting paid, you fucker. I guess, the upside is, selfishly, I get more podcasts so hooray to that. And I'm sure everyone else commenting is being positive and upbeat after the appropriate rage expressed. Sorry I'm such a downer. Don't invite me to a party. I'd sit in the corner announce my pitiful, dark little facts on my mini megaphone. I'm just no fun. But people love you, Jenn. I love you, Jenn. Just close your eyes and envision what it is you want next. Yeah, I'm a fucking crab but I'm also a realist. I believe in you. XOXOXO
Motherfuckers. That sucks and I’m so sorry to hear this news. Ugh.
I love your down to earth and affordable skin care and clothing recommendations for regular people. I recently unsubscribed to a couple newsletter that the affiliate links were way out of my budget.
Your POV means the world to me and glad I can support in a small way. You and Kimberly are the voice for not just for our generation but really the creative class who do not have generational wealth, but who enjoy cool shit.
I’ll say what my good friend said to me when I was laid off two years ago from my corporate job. Congratulations!
It sucks for sure . I was not good when it happened to me. Two years on and I’m back at my corporate salary through freelancing and am not going back. fuck those assholes. You are talented and resourceful. Take time to recalibrate and then kick some ass.
Oh my God, I'm so sorry!!! I'm a huge fan of your writing and Patreon subscriber to your new podcast and last week's episode was so good and I meant to write you guys and email and tell you how much I just love the podcast and I can't believe this happened to you is what I'm trying to say. You are a god damn delight (and so is Kimberly) and I don't really know what to say but that I am now an annual subscriber here.
I checked and I do pay to subscribe - so happy to support you. I have built such trust in your beauty and skin care recos - you don't need Yahoo - truly their loss. Wishing you strength and an exciting next chapter.
Aughghhhhh so just terribly sucky. I got laid off *twice* in 2024. It’s just horrible!! This industry is wretched. But you are a light and I know it’ll work out.
Aw mannnn - I'm so sorry! You'd just been talking about this in the podcast. I hope you get the biggest, fattest payout that will keep you afloat for a bit. But I'm not American so don't feel how significant the loss of health insurance is to your family. What a sh*tty situation. 😫
In the US, we are able to get health insurance through the ACA when we lose our jobs (special enrollment period if we lose them beyond the typical enrollment time), so all is not lost. It can be expensive, though (although subsidies help).
I’ll echo the others: This sucks out loud! and: you will eventually be okay.
I think what I hate most is the hours and days of your life that you gave to these assholes to demonstrate your value to the organization. At least you know there was nothing more that you could do to keep your job, but that’s cold comfort when you’re staring down the loss of health insurance.
I just renewed my subscription to your Substack, and I’m already looking forward to what comes next from your immensely talented self!

I couldn't have said it better, Absolutely Not. Jenn, you are a force. Hang in there.

Kicks hurt, but this WILL boost you higher. In the meantime, rage all you want.

So sorry to hear this, Jenn. Every kick may be a boost, but kicks also fucking hurt. You are SO GOOD at what you do and they are morons.

Damn. So sorry, Jenn. But looking forward to what you'll do here and elsewhere. <3
Thanks so much, Sari! You are the inspiration, of course xoxo
😘 Rooting for you.
