why are all the dresses so good right now?!
gorgeous frocks for middle-aged husks! i'm gonna go bankrupt!
Before we enter into this earth-shattering post about dresses, some literal news: I’m in the LA Times this week talking all about the new Extended Scenes podcast plus how I both think “wellness” has become dangerous/expensive bullshit and also how I practice “self care.” The headline of the story is “How to feel good in L.A., according to a reformed workaholic” to which my brother immediately texted “reformed lol” and I shot back “how dare you” when I really wanted to say “fuck off” but I’m trying to be less confrontational over text. Siblings!
Whenever you launch a new project, the publishers of said project push you to hustle for press in ways that always make me feel like my soul has left my body and been replaced by one of those Yip Yip muppets, but since this podcast is just my own thing, I promoted it exactly how I wanted (not at all lol and then in a tiny social media burst, mainly with a bunch of memes). But then this nice reporter came to me with this nice story and, well, sometimes other people’s kindness and attention makes the world feel surprisingly OK for like 45 minutes. Egos!
But back to the topic at hand (or, more accurately, at torsos, thighs and hips): DRESSES.
In all my many years, I have rarely (if ever) seen such a covetable array of high-quality, affordable, airy/well-shaped dresses in which to swaddle my personal menopausal heat dome. Gone are yesteryear’s vile cutouts. If you like (I like!), you can even sidestep all those floofy-lacy ruffles and trad-wife subservience tiers. From what I can see, this is the moment to stock up on the kinds of sleek, grownup dresses you’ll actually want to wear for years.
Read on for what I’m eyeing now.
