I hope industry knows the pull that Samantha Irby has. If she’s in an essay collection, I’m reading it. If she wrote a tv show I’m watching, if she’s on a podcast, I’m listening.

this is absolutely true. Also, she's just a damn good person and a force for good.

What a list! I’ve been a fan girl since your Etsy/Ebay blog on Lucky back in the day and cannot wait to read Ambition Monster. Thanks so much for pushing through those times when you’re not sure you can write anything anymore

Yes! And it’s a testament to your writing that I didn’t even like thrifting at the time (but I do now, oh so many years later)

Thank you for this list. I have dismissed Samatha Irby in the past because I didn't see the heart and sincerity behind the sarcasm and humor. I am going back in! Also, thanks for highlighting not-so-famous authors. The inside look into your process and your careful examination of other writers has me even MORE excited to read your book. Congratulations on your hard, hard work.

Fantastic list! I love the phrase "forensic reading." I did the same writing my novel, sometimes for content but also for style: slow and descriptive writers to remind me to stay in a scene and look around, blunt/cooler writers when my voice felt too childlike, funny writers to remind me to not take myself too seriously. This close-up look at your process is really fun to read and also a great reminder for those days when it all feels impossible.

Saving this, thank you! I, too, love Barbara Ehrenreich’s blend of science, personal narrative, and activism. And I’m currently writing a piece that references Adrienne Rich’s Anger and Tenderness 💪
